BEIJING -- Alain Bernard of France set a world record in his semifinal of the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 47.20 seconds. The previous world record was set by Eamon Sullivan of Australia in the leadoff leg of the 400-meter free relay when he went 47.24.
But in the very next heat, Sullivan took back the record, going 47.05.
Jason Lezak also made the finals with the sixth-fastest qualifying time. Garrett Weber-Gale failed to make the cut.
