Quarterback Matt Schilz is out for the season and safety/wide receiver/backup quarterback Alex Cash is likely out for the season, said Maranatha Athletic Director Brian DeHaan in an e-mail. That’s the bad news.
Here’s the good news, I think: Schilz, a junior who left early in the first quarter of Friday’s 56-14 loss to St. Margaret’s, did not dislocate his knee, he broke his femur. Now, I’m no doctor, but Schilz’s father is and he this is better.
‘Matt broke his femur and had surgery that night,’ DeHaan wrote in the e-mail. ‘He has three pins in his leg and will be off of the leg for a minimum of 4-6 weeks. Matt and his parents are very optimistic and look forward to a great senior season. Matt’s father is actually an orthopedic surgeon and was very happy that it was not a dislocated knee as was originally thought.
‘As for Alex, he went to an orthopedic today because the swelling was too large to insure a proper prognosis over the weekend. He is most likely out for the year as well with his actual injury to be determined.’
It’s horrible news that their seasons are over, but I think it’s great news that both are expected to make full recoveries. DeHaan said the team and the community are rallying around Matt and Alex.
Maranatha, which dropped in this week’s CIF poll from 2 to 6 in the Northeast Division, takes on Pasadena Poly (1-1) in their home opener this week. The game will be the first for the Minutemen under their new stadium lights.
All the players on the team I talked with were confident that they would bounce back and get back to the playoffs, and I believe them. It won’t be easy, but I think they can do it.
Wrote DeHaan: ‘The future may hold a wonderful story as our team looks to rebound and produce similar results as last year (CIF finalist).’
