Since winning the Orange County Championships in girls’ basketball in impressive fashion over the winter break, there has been only one blemish on Edison’s record: a loss to Marina.
In successive days at the tournament, Edison defeated No. 7 Santa Margarita, No. 21 Foothill and No. 8 Mira Costa behind Lynwood transfer Priscila Cergol and freshman Bonnie Samuelson.
With that performance, the then-unranked Chargers were almost certainly destined for a top 15 spot in The Times top 25. But before the next ranking could come out, in the very next game against a seemingly inferior opponent, the Chargers lost to their Huntington Beach rival, 53-51.
So now there is a three-way tie for first place in the Sunset League between Edison (15-3), Marina (12-8) and Esperanza (11-9), all of which have 4-1 league records.
Edison, ranked No. 17, gets its chance to even the score in a rematch at 7 o’clock tonight/Thursday at Edison.
