Things may have not gone Sylmar’s way in its Championship Division semifinal on Tuesday, but at least the Spartans can keep an eye on the future. Most of Sylmar’s top players are expected to return next season, and Coach Soheil Mashhoud is pleased with the direction of the program.
‘We know we’re young and tonight was a great learning experience,’ Mashhoud said. ‘We were hoping for a different result, but we just didn’t play our game.... We really look forward to next year.’
One of the guys coming back is OH Tyler Honeycutt, pictured. The junior spikester finished with 18 kills and 16 digs in the loss to El Camino Real and is one of the City Section’s top hitters. Setter Felipe Garcia and MB Stuart Cohen are also due back.
So don’t be surprised if the Spartans finally reach the big dance in 2009 after suffering semifinal exits in two of the last three years.
