The surprise early season team in boys’ basketball is No. 13-ranked Compton Centennial (5-1), which knocked off its latest powerhouse team Wednesday in the Ocean View tournament, defeating Harvard-Westlake, 82-58.
Thomas Hammock had 20 points and Deonte Burton added 19 points. These two teams could meet in the Southern Section 3A championship game. Last week, Centennial lost to No. 1 Westchester, 86-85.
Harvard-Westlake is still without injured top guards Austin Kelly (knee) and Nicky Firestone (broken clavicle). The Wolverines (2-4) are getting good experience for when they come back.
