Baseball: Andrew Thurman shuts down West Ranch

Right-hander Andrew Thurman of Orange Lutheran was all smiles before Monday’s Diamond Sports National Classic game against Valencia West Ranch because he knew the batters would be using wood bats.
Thurman was in control from start to finish in leading the Lancers to a 4-1 victory. He struck out eight, walked one and allowed three hits.
Lutheran got four runs in the fifth inning, taking advantage of the wildness of pitcher Allen Sarkissian, who walked six and hit three batters in 4 2/3 innings.
La Puente Bishop Amat defeated Scottsdale (Ariz.) Notre Dame Prep, 11-1. Rio Ruiz hit a grand slam and finished with five RBIs. Brandon McNitt threw a complete game. Bishop Amat (12-1) will play the winner of Tuesday’s 9 a.m. game between Huntington Beach Edison and Palm Desert
Encino Crespi defeated Kentfield Marin Catholic, 11-1. Michael Hubbard and Kevin Williams had three hits apiece. Ryan Brockett allowed one unearned run in five innings. The Celts (12-3) scored seven runs in the first inning.
Peninsula defeated Santa Ana Mater Dei, 1-0. Anaheim Esperanza defeated Salt Lake City Cottonwood, 5-4.
