Big Rivers Electric Corp. slipped into default.

The western Kentucky firm owes the United States $1 billion, and the government isn’t talking about how it intends to collect the debt. The Rural Electrification Administration called in all of its outstanding loans to Big Rivers on Jan. 4 after the utility failed to make its quarterly payment. REA spokeswoman Jeanne Miller said the agency would announce an action today.
