Coca-Cola plans to sell Coke in the Soviet Union.

The Atlanta-based company said the Soviet government has given permission to begin selling Coca-Cola there later this year in a deal that breaks Pepsico Inc.’s monopoly on cola sales in the Communist nation. Coke, the world’s most popular soft drink, is sold in more than 155 countries and will first go on sale in Soviet shops that serve tourists, the diplomatic corps and other visitors to the Soviet Union. The general public should be able to buy Coke in Moscow and other cities by the summer. Another Coca-Cola product, Fanta Orange, has been available to Soviet consumers since 1979 and is made and sold in Moscow, Tallin and Kiev. Pepsi-Cola, Coke’s chief competitor in the soft-drink market, has been available in the Soviet Union since 1973.
