Reagan’s Visit to Germany
What does it mean, that Reagan has announced that he will visit the German military cemetery at Bitburg and honor their dead?
The men he will honor were warriors of an evil empire. Yet they themselves were not evil. They were the ordinary GIs of their country, many of them draftees. They fought as they could, with poor bivouacs, with no air cover, with little fuel for their tanks. And in the end they fell, in the greatest defeat a major power--and Germany was that--has ever sustained.
Yet in their defeat they showed a valor that we can well respect.
Reagan’s visit to Bitburg stands to be a great act of reconciliation.
