Shultz Speech on Nicaragua

It is Shultz who has not learned the errors of the Vietnam War! It is he who must not make the mistakes of that war. You cannot constantly support corrupt regimes and then be horrified when emerging nations are given no alternative but to turn to communism as a savior.
We need to make these nations feel secure, even if they are communistic in form . . . let them be our Communists, not the Soviet Union’s. Encourage them to look to us for support and guidance. Encourage them to a broader based democracy, rather than supporting their former repressors!
Do not threaten to exterminate them if they do not do it our way!
