Community College Baseball : Santa Ana Explodes in Fifth to Put Away Golden West, 18-1

Santa Ana College scored 10 runs in the fifth inning Saturday en route to an 18-1 rout of Golden West in a South Coast Conference finale at Santa Ana.
Santa Ana first baseman Mike Lindsten batted twice in the fifth and had three RBIs. Fifteen Don batters went to the plate in the inning. Santa Ana had a total of 18 hits.
The Rustlers had a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Shawn Gilbert scored on Andy Mota’s sacrifice fly. However, in the third, Santa Ana took the lead on third baseman Dave Keith’s three-run home run. Keith was 2 for 4 with four RBIs. Matt Beltran hit a solo homer in the eighth for Santa Ana (16-8).
In other South Coast Conference action:
Saddleback 9, Compton 4--Winning pitcher David Heiligenthal struck out five in 5 innings to lead the Gauchos (9-14) to a win at Compton. Heiligenthal, a freshman, was making his first start of the season. Paul Prince picked up the save by pitching the last 3 innings, striking out three.
After the Tartars (1-23) had cut the Gauchos lead to two in the seventh, Saddleback came back with two runs in the eighth. First baseman Steve Nichols had an RBI single in the eighth. Saddleback got another run on an error by the Compton third baseman.
Gaucho center fielder Mark Webster was 5 for 6 with two RBIs. He also stole four bases. Saddleback had 14 hits, all singles.
Mt. San Antonio 8, Fullerton 6--Mountie Scott Melendez was 3 for 3 with two RBIs and two stolen bases at Walnut. It was Melendez who scored the winning run in the seventh.
Fullerton (10-14) had rallied to tie the score at 6-6 in the top of the seventh. First baseman Rodney Clark hit a solo home run in the inning.
Melendez led off the seventh with a single, stole second and moved to third base on two walks. Relief pitcher Mike Balli hit a sacrifice fly to score Melendez. Balli got his second save of the season. Todd Hayes (7-3) struck out three to record the win. The Mounties finished with a 10-14 SCC record.
Cerritos 6, Cypress 2--The conference champion Falcons defeated the Chargers at Cerritos.
