PARIS — Pan American World Airways said today that it has signed a definitive contract with the European commercial aircraft consortium Airbus Industrie for the purchase of 28 A310 and A320 jet passenger planes.
The order is worth $1.1 billion, Pan Am’s Vice Chairman Gerald Gitner told a news conference. The announcement represents the final contractual stage of a preliminary order announced last September. Pan Am is the second U.S. carrier after Eastern Airlines to buy the Airbus.
