San Diego Section Tennis : Bubnack Loses to Top Seed in Three Sets

SAN DIEGO — Ramona High School’s Greg Failla, the top-seeded singles player in the San Diego Section individual tennis championships, was extended to three sets Wednesday before beating unseeded Tim Bubnack of Torrey Pines in the quarterfinals at The Bishop’s School.
Failla, 70-1 this season, rallied to beat Bubnack, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. The third set was tied, 5-5, before Failla pulled it out.
Failla will play fifth-seeded Woody Yocum of Monte Vista in the semifinals, which start at 2:30 today at Bishop’s. Yocum pulled off the only mild singles upset of the quarterfinals when he beat third-seeded Carl Chang of San Dieguito, 6-4, 6-4.
The other semifinal match will match second-seeded Paul Carbone of Bonita Vista and fourth-seeded Craig Ellison of Torrey Pines. Carbone beat the No. 7 seed, Jimmy Takada of Parker, 6-3, 6-4, and Ellison beat the No. 6 seed, Dale Minney of Patrick Henry, 6-1, 6-4.
