COMMENCEMENT 1985 : Cal State Los Angeles

The 38th annual commencement ceremonies were held at 9:45 a.m. Saturday in the John A. Greenlee Alumni Plaza on campus. Degrees: 1,306 diplomas awarded, including 536 graduate degrees.
Speaker: Rep. Augustus F. Hawkins (D-Los Angeles) spoke about shaping the future. “Despite the inequities and injustice, and the voluminous problems those of my generation have bequeathed to you, I have great confidence in our ability not merely to be a spectator of the future but to be active in shaping it, in converting our faith and our dreams and aspirations into cooperative and constructive action.”
Honorary Degrees:
Hawkins, doctor of laws: “His vision and his leadership continue to influence the laws which govern the lives of Californians and remain today as an impressive monument to this outstanding legislator.”
Other Graduations:
California State University, Dominguez Hills: Los Angeles Times cartoonist Paul Conrad was the featured speaker Saturday at the campus’ 19th commencement ceremonies held for the first time in the 7-Eleven Olympic Velodrome, site of the 1984 Olympic cycling events. Awarded were 2,192 degrees.
California State University, San Bernardino: Latino actress Carmen Zapata, managing producer of the Bilingual Foundation for the Arts in Los Angeles, spoke at Saturday’s commencement exercises. A total of 1,150 diplomas were awarded, including 260 graduate degrees.
