55 Die on Highways as Holiday Nears End

SACRAMENTO — With the long Fourth of July weekend more than three-quarters over, 55 Californians had lost their lives in state traffic accidents, California Highway Patrol officers said Sunday.
In addition, 2,416 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, CHP Officer Phil Alford said.
The deaths were recorded between 6 p.m. July 3 and 6 a.m. Sunday. The weekend officially ended at midnight Sunday.
The Fourth of July hasn’t stretched to 4 days since 1978, when 86 people died on the state’s highways, Alford said.
