E. W. Scripps Co. of Cincinnati, also known as Scripps Howard, signed a letter of intent to merge with John P. Scripps Newspaper Group, the San Diego-based chain that publishes six daily and four weekly newspapers in California, including the Ventura Star-Free Press, the Thousand Oaks News Chronicle and the San Luis Obispo Telegram-Tribune. The two companies were founded by separate branches of the same family, E. W. Scripps in 1878 and John P. Scripps in 1928. The John P. Scripps firm will become an operating division of the older company.
