Suit on Women Guards Settled

WASHINGTON — Philadelphia today agreed to allow women guards to serve in men’s prisons and pay $950,000 in back pay to women who were discriminated against, the Justice Department said.
The consent decree, containing one of the largest back-pay awards in a public employer discrimination case, was filed today in federal court in Philadelphia, resolving an employment discrimination suit charging women were limited to certain prison jobs.
