Dalkon Shield Judge to Retire Next Month

MINNEAPOLIS — U.S. District Judge Miles Lord, who once was criticized for telling A. H. Robins Co. that its Dalkon Shield contraceptive was an “instrument of death,” announced Thursday that he will retire next month.
Lord, who turned 65 in November, said he decided to retire after 20 years because a recent change in federal law will allow him to retain his $78,700 salary.
