Left-hander Steve Carlton, sidelined since June 22 with a shoulder injury, pitched a simulated five-inning game, leaving Philadelphia Phillie Manager John Felske impressed. Carlton, recovering from a strained rotator cuff in his left shoulder, threw 120 pitches to three Phillies batters at Veterans Stadium.
“It’s the best curveball I’ve seen him have since I’ve been here,” said Felske, in his second season as the Phillie manager. “His fastball was in the 87, 88 m.p.h. range. During the season, (it) was about 84.”
