An Israeli-U.S. free trade pact went into effect.

The agreement, effective Sunday, cut U.S. taxes on Israeli imports by at least 10% and slashed Israel’s tax on some U.S. products by 20%. The accord provides for removing all trade tariffs in four stages by Jan. 1, 1995. The first stage called for Israel to cut 20% from duties on U.S. food, textiles and chemicals, while the United States eliminated a 10% to 11.5% duty on Israeli electronic components, medical equipment, chemicals and some textiles and cut duties by 20% on metal products and some foods and clothing.
