NEW YORK — Yannick Noah, the No. 7 men’s seed, moved into the quarterfinals and No. 3 women’s seed Hana Mandlikova of Czechoslovakia advanced to the semifinals today at the U.S. Open Tennis championships.
The French-born Noah defeated 18-year-old Jay Berger, who made the tournament field as a wild card, 6-7, 6-2, 6-3 6-1. Mandlikova, a runner-up here in 1980 and again in 1982, scored a 7-6, 7-5 victory today over another Czech, No. 7 seed Helena Sukova, winning the first-set tie-breaker 7-4.
