Women’s Volleyball : Aztecs Beat USC; Lose in Semifinals

The 10th-ranked San Diego State women’s volleyball team defeated No. 1 USC, 15-8, 15-12 in the quarterfinals of the Cal State Fullerton Tournament on Saturday afternoon. SDSU lost in the semifinals to Arizona, 15-4, 4-15, 15-13. The Wildcats went on to win the tournament, beating UC Santa Barbara, 17-5, 7-15, 19-17.
Aztec junior setter Liane Soto was named to the all-tournament team.
In other action:
U.S. International University at the Wyoming Tournament--USIU finished fifth in this six-team tournament at Laramie. Nebraska beat 15th-ranked Cal State Long Beach in the final, 15-2, 15-5, 15-7.
In third-round play Saturday, USIU lost to 20th-ranked Wyoming, 15-7, 15-7, then beat Idaho 15-8, 15-9, 15-5. The Gulls lost to Long Beach, 15-10, 11-15, 15-10, 15-7, and to Montana, 3-15, 15-13, 18-16, 13-15 and 15-13 on Friday. USIU is 4-7 this season.
University of San Diego at Nevada Las Vegas Tournament--The Toreros dropped four straight matches, finishing last in the tournament. Saturday morning, USD was defeated by Mississippi, 15-11, 9-15, 15-9, 15-11. In the first round of pool play Friday, USD lost to Washington, Utah and Illinois.
Illinois, the winner of the of the tournament, beat Cal, 15-9, 9-15, 15-4 in the final.
