Yosemite Will Close Hydroelectric Plant, Calls It Incompatible

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. — The National Park Service has shut down a small hydroelectric plant at this popular park, concluding the operation was incompatible with park values.
The 2,000-kilowatt plant has supplied the park with an average of 65% of its electricity since 1918, and the park sold surplus power to Pacific Gas & Electric Co. in wet years. Shutting down the power plant will cost the park about $615,000 for power purchases from PG&E;, plant supervisor Larry Millard estimated.
