Federal charges, including five felony counts, were filed in San Francisco against 34 people who allegedly were fraudulently paid unemployment benefits. U.S. Atty. Joseph P. Russoniello, noting that most of the defendants are ex-federal employees, said the charges result from a computer cross-match of federal workers who drew unemployment benefits while collecting paychecks. Russoniello said the defendants had been employed by the departments of Treasury, Agriculture, Interior, Health and Human Services, Army, Navy and Air Force, and the Environmental Protection Agency and Veterans Administration. Most are charged with misdemeanors carrying a maximum of a year’s imprisonment and $1,000 fine on conviction.
