Massachusetts police have the right to stop motorists at drunken driving roadblocks if police follow guidelines designed to protect the safety and legal rights of drivers, the state Supreme Court ruled. The justices, in a 5-2 decision, rejected appeals by three men who argued that a 1983 roadblock in Sunderland was illegal under the Massachusetts constitution and was an unfair search and seizure under the Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
