The Berkeley Unified School District has announced a spending freeze that may wipe out high school sports and other special programs. Acting Supt. Louis Zlokovich said a $900,000 budget deficit has forced the district into a “dire situation” that requires cutting bus transportation for field trips and athletic programs, including the football team’s final three away games. Zlokovich imposed an immediate spending freeze that includes limits on hiring substitutes and scrutiny of special programs for gifted, handicapped and non-English-speaking students, as well as drug abuse counseling.
