Rabbi Urges ‘Equal-Faith’ Partnership’

ROME — A Jewish leader told Vatican representatives last weekend that the future of Christian-Jewish cooperation depends on accepting Judaism as an equal faith-partner in upholding religious ideals.
“Jews cannot accept the historical Christian position that Christianity replaced the people of Israel as the true faith,” said Rabbi Mordecai Waxman, past president of the Synagogue Council of America.
“Jews do not believe that a faith grown out of Judaism is better, only different.”
The consultation of about 60 Jewish and Roman Catholic officials agreed on a joint program “to overcome the residues of indifference, resistance and suspicion” between the two faiths.
The meeting marked the 20th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council’s declaration affirming basic ties with Juidaism and denouncing anti-Semitism and the notion that that Jews collectively were responsible for Christ’s death.
