Copper Mine Prepares to Reopen After 3 Years

WHITE PINE, Mich. — Workers at the White Pine copper mine, shut down since 1982, began training sessions Monday and took physicals as the new owners started the slow task of resuming copper production.
“This is pretty well a training week,” said Michael Dunn, vice president of Copper Range Co., which bought the mine last week. “Next week we should be able to take the crews underground and the next week start mining.”
The mine employed 3,000 people when it was closed three years ago during a long strike and sliding copper prices.
