JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — Riot police shot and killed two black women in separate clashes today, one of them in a remote corner of South Africa that had stayed peaceful through the nation’s past 14 months of violence.
Police headquarters in Pretoria said a black woman was killed in Upington, a small town in northwestern South Africa on the edge of the Kalahari Desert, in one of three skirmishes there late Monday and early today. In the Mamelodi black township near Pretoria, a mob of blacks attacked a black policeman’s home and he responded with revolver fire, killing a woman and wounding a man, the police report said.
