Drake University is dropping football next fall but will resume playing in 1987 at the NCAA Division III level.
Drake University President Michael Ferrari said the move from the current Division I-AA level will save the school thousands of dollars because Division III programs do not have athletic scholarships.
Drake will continue to compete at the Division I level in basketball and other sports.
