A mechanic-driver and a passenger were injured in a chain reaction crash involving three Rapid Transit District buses on the San Bernardino Freeway busway. An RTD official said all three buses were driving east when the brakes of the first vehicle locked and the bus halted. Another bus crashed into the rear of the first, and a third plowed into the second. Albert Richter, 56, a mechanic who was taking the second bus to the RTD yard in El Monte, suffered internal injuries and was reported in good condition at a West Covina hospital. A woman passenger, one of 11 in the third bus, was hospitalized for observation. An investigation was under way to determine what caused the brakes to lock, the RTD said.
