An exchange program between the United States and Cuban track and field federations is in the works, double Olympic gold medalist Alberto Juantorena and silver medalist Fred Newhouse said in Houston.
Juantorena, the Cuban who won the 400- and 800-meter titles in the 1976 Montreal Games--the only Olympic runner to accomplish that sweep--is attending the seventh annual convention of The Athletics Congress, the national governing body of the sport, as an observer.
Now retired from competition, the 35-year-old Juantorena is a vice minister of the Cuban Athletic Federation, an organization similar to TAC. Newhouse, the runner-up to Juantorena in the Olympic 400 nine years ago, is the senior vice president of TAC.
