Rain Is Possible but Sun Should Return by Sunday

High humidity and a chance of showers are expected today and Saturday, but some sunshine and warmer temperatures may return Sunday, National Weather Service forecasters said Thursday.

The thick cloud cover that shrouded San Diego Thursday is expected to cling through Saturday with above-normal humidity and a 20% chance of rain, forecasters said.

“The timing of the showers is unpredictable; they can happen just about any time,” forecaster Wilbur Shigehara said.

A weak storm stalled about 1,000 miles southwest of San Diego since the beginning of the week has been generating the clouds and moisture that blew into the county at mid-week on upper-level winds, Shigehara said.

The storm, forecast to hit Central California, was expected to move about 500 miles closer to California by today.

Shigehara said the moist, subtropical air associated with the storm should leave San Diego County by Sunday as the storm moves north, allowing the air to dry out and the sunshine to return.

Although showers today and Saturday may bring measurable rain, forecasters predicted that the accumulation would not be significant.

Temperatures that have been close to normal by day and warmer than normal at night will continue at least through Saturday, forecasters said.

Coastal and inland highs are expected to be in the 60s; coastal lows should be in the 50s, and inland lows are expected to be in the 46- to 56-degree range.
