Cal Poly Pomona has named Andreas Weyermann of San Gabriel men’s tennis coach, Athletic Director Karen Miller announced.
Weyermann, 29, was a volunteer assistant coach with the Cal State Fullerton men’s team last year and has been boys and girls coach at Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe Springs.
Although Pomona is not considered among the favorites for the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. title, Weyermann said he is optimistic.
“Over the holidays I had some practices with the team and I was pleased with the response of the players,” Weyermann said. “Everyone worked very hard and has a good attitude. We have a chance to have a winning season, but we may have to pull off some surprises.”
Pomona opens its non-conference season against Weyermann’s former team, Fullerton, on Jan. 28 at Fullerton.
Lisa Davenport, athletic trainer at Cal Poly Pomona, is trainer for the U.S. softball team that will compete in the sixth annual Women’s World Softball Championships starting Saturday in Auckland, New Zealand.
Davenport, the first trainer ever to travel with the U. S. team, was selected by the Amateur Softball Assn. “I’m excited because I will get to work at a different level of competition,” she said. “This is the first time I have had an opportunity to work and travel at the international level.”
