Community College Basketball : Johnson Wins 399th at Cypress

Coach Don Johnson got his 399th win against 166 losses in his 19 years at Cypress College thanks to the Chargers’ 68-63 win over Saddleback at Cypress in South Coast Conference play Wednesday.
Cypress’ Scott Swanner, a 6-foot 4-inch sophomore forward, scored 19 points on 8 of 9 shooting from the floor. He also had 11 rebounds.
Jeff Martineau, a sophomore guard, had 15 points and 7 assists for the Chargers.
Cypress is 3-1 in South coast Conference and 13-5 overall.
Saddleback (1-4, 6-10) was led by James Taylor’s 18 points.
In other South Coast Conference play:
Orange Coast 71, Golden West 67--The Pirates’ Bob Mulcahey hit a free throw with 1:47 to play and teammate Matt Judd followed that with a three-point play to break a 63-63 tie to put the Pirates ahead for good at Orange Coast.
Golden West’s Byron Strachan led all scorers with 32 points.
Cerritos 95, Rancho Santiago 68--A bench-clearing brawl with eight minutes to play marred Cerritos’ victory at home. The win was the Falcons’ (5-0 and 19-1) 19th straight.
Tom Tolbert led Cerritos with 21 points. Rancho Santiago’s Mark Moses led all scorers with 30 points.
Mt. San Antonio College 53, Compton 52--The game at Mt. SAC was tied at 52 when Efrem Leonard made one of two free throws with 57 seconds to play.
