MARION, Ark. — Two tractor-trailers collapsed like accordions and a car was crushed in a 27-vehicle chain collision in dense fog Saturday. The crash killed eight people and injured at least 18 others, police said.
The pileup occurred on Interstate 55, about four miles north of West Memphis, Ark. The highway was expected to be closed through the night.
State police Cpl. Larry Patterson said that the sudden fog came from “some sort of a freak temperature inversion.” He said that “someone attempted to slow down and someone else ran into him, and it was a chain reaction.”
