Portugal’s Communist party backed former Socialist Prime Minister Mario Soares for president, calling him less of a “devil” than right wing candidate Diogo Freitas do Amaral. In the first round of the elction held earlier this month, the Communists supported defeated Socialist Francisco Salgado Zenha. Communists opposed Soares because of his anti-Communist stand after the country’s 1974 revolution. Soares needs the Communist vote in the second round of balloting set for Feb. 16.
