MANGALORE, India — Pope John Paul II today mourned the 2,000 victims of the 1984 Bhopal poison gas leak and prayed for thousands of impoverished survivors who still suffer from the world’s worst industrial disaster.
“I wish to recall the victims of the tragedies that accompany man’s efforts to make progress and commend to the Lord the large number of people who lost their lives in Bhopal,” the pontiff told almost 300,000 people near the airport of this southern coastal city, about 750 miles southwest of Bhopal.
