San Fernando Girls Slip Past Monroe, 28-27

Felicia Kelly scored the go-ahead basket with less than two minutes left Wednesday as San Fernando High held off Monroe, 28-27, in a girls Pac-5 League basketball game.
Kelly’s 18-footer gave the Tigers a 26-25 lead, and Denna Simpkins sealed the win by scoring from 10 feet with less than a minute to go.
Monroe lost a chance to pull within one when center Shonna Pierce missed a layup with 31 seconds left.
Yudira Salmeron gave San Fernando a 24-23 lead, stealing the ball at midcourt and scoring a break-away layup midway in the fourth quarter. But Pierce hit a short jumper for a 25-24 Monroe lead.
Monroe led by as much as five points in the final period.
San Fernando is 6-0 in league. Monroe is 2-4.
Pierce scored a team-high eight points for Monroe.
San Fernando led, 9-4, at the end of the first quarter, but only scored one point in the second quarter. Monroe, which scored six points in the second quarter, trailed at the half, 10-9.
