East German Sets World Swim Record

Silke Hoerner of East Germany set a world short-course record in the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:07.05 at an international swimming meet Saturday at Bonn, West Germany.
Hoerner, 20, broke the record of 1:07.47, set by American Tracy Caulkins in January, 1981.
In other races, Olympic champions Michael Gross of West Germany, Vladimir Salnikov of the Soviet Union, Alex Baumann of Canada and Rick Carey of the United States all suffered rare defeats.
Stefane Caron of France won the 100-meter freestyle in a time of 49.04 seconds, with Gross third in 49.56. Steffan Pfeiffer of West Germany, the Olympic bronze medalist, took the 400-meter freestyle in 3:44.94, while Salnikov placed third in 3:45.88.
Bert Goebel of West Germany set a national record of 2:14.50 to win the 200 breaststroke, with Baumann fourth in 2:15.31. Igor Poljanski of the Soviet Union won the 100-meter backstroke in 54.53 seconds, while Carey was far back in fourth at 56.14.
