MAPUTO, Mozambique — The diesel engine of a freight train raided by thieves collided with a passenger train in a suburb of the Mozambican capital, and at least 15 people were killed, it was reported Friday.
The national news agency, AIM, said 31 people in the passenger train were injured in the crash Thursday night in Machava.
The engine had been pulling freight cars when thieves cut a coupler to separate the carriages and steal a load of sugar, AIM quoted witnesses as saying. The engine moved ahead to seek help in Machava, and was headed back for Maputo, when it collided with the passenger train.
