SAN DIEGO — The United States International University softball team opened West Coast Athletic Conference play Friday by sweeping a doubleheader from the University of Nevada-Reno, 3-2, and 2-1 in the 10-inning second game.
With the Gulls trailing, 2-0, in the seventh inning of the opener, Marina Gault’s triple drove in two runs. Gault scored the winning run later in the inning on Becky Wolfe’s sacrifice fly to center.
Terry Esquivel (7-6) had a complete-game victory for the Gulls.
In the second game, Robin Krall’s bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 10th gave USIU the win. Krall (8-9) also pitched a complete game, giving up only four hits.
Kathy Martell and Kim Petersen were both 2 for 3 for the Gulls (2-0 in conference, 15-15 overall).
