UCLA Shotputter Skips Meet, Awaits Ruling on Eligibility
- Share via
John Frazier, UCLA All-American shotputter, did not travel with the track team to Dallas for today’s 7-Eleven Invitational because he is waiting for his eligibility status to be determined by the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. Council, which will meet next week.
Frazier, a senior from Lancaster who finished sixth in the shotput at the NCAA meet last year, may be ineligible for the rest of this season because he competed unattached in 1984 collegiate meets as a redshirt.
Bob Larsen, UCLA men’s coach, said NCAA rules previously allowed for a redshirt to compete in collegiate meets and he was unaware until recently of a new interpretation of the rule. Larsen held Frazier out of the dual meet against California last Saturday.
Meanwhile, USC Coach Ernie Bullard will return today to San Jose State, where he coached for 14 years, for a dual meet between the Trojans and the Spartans.
