Carson : Renewal Rulings Appealed

Los Angeles County has appealed two Superior Court decisions that upheld Carson’s declaration of 1,640 acres as city redevelopment territory.
Paula Snyder, deputy county counsel, said the county will argue before the state Court of Appeal that Judge Norman R. Dowds erred in deciding that Carson officials had significant evidence of the blighted conditions necessary to qualify the property for redevelopment tax assistance.
The county filed two suits against the city in September, 1984--about two months after Carson created the redevelopment area, which is separated into two projects. Each suit addresses one project.
At stake in the two appeals, filed April 7 and March 17, is an estimated $750 million in tax revenue that Carson may use for redeveloping its land. Most of that money, to be collected during the next 40 years, would otherwise go to the county.
A decision on the appeals is expected in about a year.
