Cardinals Win in 12th Inning, End Losing Streak

SAN FRANCISCO — Jerry White and Vince Coleman drove in runs for St. Louis in the 12th inning as the Cardinals ended their seven-game losing streak Monday with a 5-4 victory over the San Francisco Giants.
The St. Louis runs in the 12th were unearned because of an error by Giants pitcher Mark Davis (1-1), who fielded a bunt and dropped the ball as he turned to throw. The Giants scored a run in the bottom of the inning off Greg Bargar and had the bases loaded before Pat Perry saved the victory by retiring Dan Gladden on a long fly to left field.
Todd Worrell (1-1), the third of five Cardinals pitchers, got the victory by pitching the 10th and 11th.
Terry Pendleton opened the 12th with a single off Davis. Tom Lawless and Ozzie Smith followed with sacrifices, with Lawless reaching first on Davis’ error.
White hit a sacrifice fly to right field to break the 3-3 tie, and Coleman’s infield single scored Lawless.
Bob Melvin’s pinch-hit, two-run double off St. Louis reliever Ken Dayley with one out in the bottom of the ninth tied the score, 3-3.
