Amoco will end its retail operations in five states.

Of Amoco’s 15,000 stations nationwide, 924 are in the affected areas--Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Louisiana and Texas. The Chicago-based company said the operations will be withdrawn by Dec. 31. Amoco spokeswoman Pat Wright said Amoco’s market share in Massachusetts is 5%, down from 25% in the past five years, while in Rhode Island, Amoco’s 2.3% market share has not shown an improvement in five years. In Connecticut, Amoco’s market share is 7.7%, she said. Spokesman Carl Meyerdirk said the company had a 0.5% share in the Texas market. Amoco’s share of the market in Louisiana, where it has more than 600 outlets, has dropped 20% in the last five years to 8.4%, Meyerdirk said.
