Christian Wins Speedway Scratch Main

Alan Christian of Huntington Beach took the lead in the first lap of the scratch main event Friday night and went on to win the four-lap race in front of 3,706 at the weekly speedway motorcycle races at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.
Keith Chrisco of Whittier finished second, John Sandona of Riche Canyon was third and Bobby Schwartz of Costa Mesa, who flew from London to California on Friday, was fourth.
Eddie Castro of Ojai won the handicap main event, and Tony Briggs, son of four-time world speedway champion Barry Briggs, was second. The race was Briggs’ first in two years since he suffered a back injury in England in 1984. Chrisco was third in the race.
Craig Furman of Gardena won the second-division main, and Wayne Manchester of Rancho Cucamonga won the third-division main. In a match race, Schwartz defeated Colton’s Mike Faria.
Friday night’s program marked the 17th anniversary of speedway racing at the Orange County Fairgrounds.
