A Texas child who underwent two heart transplants in 25 hours died today after spending nearly two weeks in critical condition, a spokesman for Loma Linda University Medical Center said.
Nicky Carrizales, 3, died about 8:30 or 9 a.m., said hospital spokesman Dick Weismeyer. Weismeyer said he had no information about the cause of the child’s death, but a news conference was scheduled for later in the day. The San Antonio boy’s own heart had been replaced June 18 because he suffered cardiomyopathy, a fatal degeneration of the heart muscle. But within a few hours of the surgery the heart was failing and Nicky underwent a second operation on June 19.
