Liberty Weekend

For the last few days I have seen articles about reactions of some foreigners, particularly foreign journalists, regarding our centennial celebration of the Statue of Liberty. Specifically, I have taken note of the fact that some of them have criticized our celebration as too glitzy, not at all staid or solemn as such an event might be conducted in their country.
To this I must comment that, after all, we are celebrating the centennial of our Statue of Liberty, who, in the less-famous words of Emma Lazarus, cries out with silent lips, “Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!”--followed by the more famous, “Give me your tired, your poor . . . “
How ludicrous it would be to celebrate her birthday with the storied pomp of those ancient lands!
