Echoes of a Summit: Nixon and Gromyko Confer in Private

MOSCOW — Former President Richard M. Nixon spent 2 1/2 hours discussing Soviet-American relations with Soviet President Andrei A. Gromyko in the Kremlin today, Nixon’s spokesman said.
John Taylor, the former President’s spokesman, said he could give no details of the meeting, which he said was a one-on-one conversation with only two translators present.
Earlier today, Nixon met for about 15 minutes with Georgy A. Arbatov, a top Kremlin adviser on the United States and head of the Institute on the United States and Canada.
Nixon also gave a 20-minute address to about 150 people at the institute and fielded questions from them for about 30 minutes, Taylor said.
Nixon’s private visit, which began Saturday, is his first to the Soviet Union since a summit with President Leonid Brezhnev in 1974. Nixon resigned in disgrace just weeks after the summit.
